Bulletproof Music Studio is home to hundreds of unique guitars. That’s right, hundreds. And we do not mean a bunch of standard student teaching guitars thrown into a closet. There is an actual guitar cavern housing such beauties. More in this in the future.

So today, let’s show what’s at Bulletproof by beginning with one that was hanging on the wall near the mixing board during a session. The 1971 Gibson Les Paul Recording Guitar.

In 1971 Gibson introduced the Les Paul Recording Guitar. This was designed closely to resemble Les Paul’s personal guitar which was equipped with two slanted low impedance pickups with the Gibson logo molded on the covers.

Why was this done? During multi-track recording, which was created by Les Paul, the addition of each sound would degrade. And the answer, Les discovered, was low impedance input.

In order to make the output impedance compatible with normal high impedance amps or low impedance, the guitar was equipped with integral transformers.

So, while in a studio to get clean tracks and a broader frequency bandwidth, the transformer would be turned off and plug directly into the board. Any tweaking would be done during the mix.

When this guitar was played live and plugged directly into a standard amp, the Les Paul Low-Hi Impedance Tonal Circuitry was switched to high impedance.

There was also a phase switch, which put the pickups in phase or out-of-phase with one other.

A unique feature was the tone selector switch was that it could bypass the treble and bass controls yielding a flat frequency.

The bridge was a new version of the Tune-O-Matic bridge.

Gibson produced these guitars from 1971 through 1980. It was made of solid Honduran mahogany and necks were three piece laminated Mahogany with bound ebony rosewood fingerboards and mother-of-pearl block inlays. Come to Bulletproof Music Music Studio and step into inspiration.

What do we see? It’s a pair of flutes found in Geissenkloesterle Cave in Germany. These date back 42,000 to 43,000 years ago. This pair is made of bird bone and mammoth ivory. The flute is the oldest woodwind instrument which date as far back to 7000 B.C. in China. Not much has changed since 1832 when Theobald Boehm, a watchmaker from Munich, Germany created his version of the instrument that we know today. Louis Dorus (1860’s), Rudall Carte Co. (1860’s) Otto Schwedler (1890’s) and Alexander Murray (1960’s), have attempted to make improvements on Boehm’s design. Some of these flutes are still played today but they have not impacted much at all. Boehm’s construction is both complex and elegant, yet, intuitive and straightforward. Franz Joseph Haydn(1732-1809), the Austrian composer would write the first and second flute pieces exactly the same so the flute would be heard along with the rest of the woodwinds. It isn’t until the late 1940’s that the instrument is included in Jazz when microphone amplification allows the flute’s tones to be distinguished from other instruments. Flutes have proven to be a coveted instrument. In 1938, Verne Powell was commissioned to create a Concert C flute made of platinum for the 1939 World’s Fair. His creation was the Powell #365 – a platinum flute with sterling silver keys. After its sale to William Kincaid of the Philadelphia Orchestra and a few change of hands due to the deaths of its various owners spanning many decades, the Powell #365 was successfully bid in 1986 for $187,000. Would you pay this much for an instrument ? ...

Ok, it's almost Halloween and you've decided to write a spooky song. You may wish to write your new ditty in a minor key. D minor just may be the spookiest of the spooky keys. Make sure that you write a part to be played on the organ. Organ music helps one to convey creepiness. Tritones are also very helpful if you want to scare the listener. It is said that the Catholic Church had banned these chords as they stirred up evil. Black Sabbath wasn't scared. Are you? ...
